The Black Cat of Kidwelly

🐈‍⬛ The Black Cat of Kidwelly – Our Town’s Mysterious Symbol 🐈‍⬛

Did you know that Kidwelly’s coat of arms and official town seal proudly feature a black cat?

Legend has it that after the devastating plague of 1349–51 swept through the town, the returning townsfolk found only one living creature in the deserted streets — a black cat. 🐾

The black cat of Kidwelly

This lone survivor became a symbol of hope, resilience, and deliverance.

Another version of the tale connects the name “Kidwelly” to old spellings like Catwelli or Cadwely, suggesting the “cat” in our town’s name might have inspired the legend itself.

Why the Black Cat Still Matters Today

• You’ll spot the black cat on town signage, tourism branding, and even official materials.

• The “Black Cat Tourism Strategy” celebrates this unique symbol while supporting our local visitor economy.

• The cat represents Kidwelly’s enduring spirit — surviving plague, wars, and hard times with a touch of mystery and charm.

📜 A Bit of History

The story turns the usual superstition on its head — instead of bad luck, Kidwelly’s black cat stands for hope.

Though historians can’t verify every detail, the legend is deeply rooted in local folklore. (Some even say it may once have been an otter… but the cat won out!)
